Centrally located within the state of South Carolina is a fantastic and expansive zoological park that offers a bit of something for everyone. Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is located along the banks of the Saluda River in Columbia, SC. The zoo encompasses 170 acres of lush property and includes the zoo, botanical garden, aquarium, Sky-High Safari, Waterfall Junction, and a Zipline Canopy Tour.
The original portion of Riverbanks Zoo opened in Columbia, SC around April, 1974 and has grown progressively since then. Currently, the zoo is home to approximately 2000 animals. Some specialty animals include; gorillas, koala bears, giraffes, zebras, and three different varieties of penguins. Riverbanks Zoo is also home to a large flock of flamingoes. In fact, the last animal that was living during the zoo’s inception, was a female flamingo that passed away in 2014.
While visiting Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, visitors can enjoy viewing the many varieties of animals found in unique habitats, stroll through the botanical garden while viewing over 4200 species of interesting plants, take an adventure on the Sky-High Safari ropes course, or splash in for some fun at Waterfall Junction. Visitors can also enjoy a carousel ride, pony ride, small train ride, or enjoy a picnic within the zoo’s perimeter. There are so many fun and interesting activities at Riverbanks Zoo, that it truly is a place for people of all ages to enjoy.
Throughout the year, Riverbanks Zoo guests will find many special events that are offered. Some of these events include Boo at the Zoo, Lights Before Christmas, Brew at the Zoo, and innovative camp programs for children. The zoo is open every day of the year, except for Thanksgiving day and Christmas day. Hours for the zoo are generally 9-5; however, the hours are extended during the summer months and for special events.
